HVAC equipment manufacturers are required to comply with the EPA’s restriction on production of lower global warming potential (GWP) systems by January 1, 2025. To do this, a new refrigerant is coming to town, called R-454B.
The good news is that the new refrigerant significantly reduces the GWP (466) compared to the former R-410a (2,088). The bad news is that systems manufactured using the new R-454B are incompatible with the current R-410a and vice versa. More bad news is that system costs are expected to increase by as much as 30%, beginning in the 4th quarter of 2024. In addition, inventory shortages are expected during this transition.
But don’t despair; while R-410a is being phased out, it will still be available for repair purposes. You can expect the cost of R-410a to increase as its phaseout continues through 2036. Here at Stanfield, we advise you to evaluate your system and determine if it would be wise to consider replacing your older system before the anticipated price increase takes effect.
