This fall, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia is amplifying its efforts to address food insecurity across its 15-county service area. The Food Bank and its partners work to connect neighbors with nourishing food. Recent data from Feeding America and research in partnership with the University of Georgia highlight the increasing urgency, showing a 30% rise in food insecurity across Northeast Georgia.
The Food Bank’s initiatives are designed to provide children, seniors, families, and individuals with wholesome meals during a time when many are facing difficult choices between basic needs like housing, medical care, and food.
Local partnerships and volunteers also play a vital role in distributing food across the region. Over 225 local non-profits collaborate as “Members” - the distributing arm - of the Food Bank. Volunteers help sort food at the warehouse and distribute meals.
With the recent expansion of the Athens distribution center, its storage capacity for fresh and shelf-stable foods has doubled. The expansion is expected to increase the Food Banks’ ability to close the gap on hunger. In 2024, the Food Bank is on-track to distribute 14 million
pounds of food – a record-high for the organization – surpassing distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia invites you to take action. Through financial contributions, food donations, and volunteer support, Northeast Georgia can ensure that food will always be in reach for the neighbors who need it. Donate, Volunteer, or learn more by visiting www.foodbanknega.org.
